Jimmy Tata does not own a phone and newspapers seem to be his window to the outside world.

Ratan Tata on Tuesday took a trip down memory lane as he posted a photo with his low-profile younger brother Jimmy from their childhood.

The black-and-white photo, which has the brothers smiling into the camera, was taken in 1945. A dog too is posing with the siblings.

“Those were happy days. Nothing came between us. (1945 with my brother Jimmy),” the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons posted on Instagram.

His brother, Jimmy Tata, meanwhile, has maintained a distance from limelight. A shareholder in Tata Sons and several other Tata companies, he is a trustee of Sir Ratan Tata Trust, a position he inherited after his father Naval died, in accordance with his will, The Times of India had reported in 2016.

Though a shareholder in Tata Sons and several other Tata companies, Jimmy never was interested in business. As per reports, he never kept a mobile phone, and newspapers are his only source of information. Even then he is aware of every development of the Tata group.

Jimmy Naval Tata, who is shareholder in Tata Sons and several other Tata companies, became the trustee of Sir Ratan Tata Trust in accordance with his father Naval Tata’s will after he died in 1989, reports The Times of India. According to his July 2015 letter to Tata Sons, he holds 3,262 ordinary shares, with a subject line, `In case of liquidation of Tata Sons Ltd’, where he has estimated the break-up value at more than “Rs 10 lakh crore share”.

As per this report, Jimmy is younger to Ratan Tata by two years and worked in various Tata companies before he retired in the ’90s.

A young Jimmy was adopted by Sir Ratanji Tata’s wife Navabai from a middle-class Parsi family after the death of his father, the report added.
Jimmy and Ratan have another sibling Noel, who was born to Naval Tata and his second wife Simone. Noel is the bother-in-law of the Late Cyrus Mistry; he is the MD of Tata International and chairman of Trent.

He resides in a posh 2 BHK apartment on the sixth floor of Hampton Court in Mumbai’s Colaba. He is a recluse, doesn’t even own a mobile phone. Neighbours know him as an introverted bachelor. When TOI approached him over the Cyrus Mistry issue, he handed the newspaper six enormous files saying, “What you want to know about me and my opinion is in here.”

Ratan Naval Tata recently celebrated his 85th birthday on December 28, 2022. He was born in Mumbai in 1937. Ratan was raised by his grandmother. He did his schooling in Mumbai at the Campion School and finished secondary education at the Cathedral and John Connon School. He has a degree in architecture with structural engineering from Cornell University Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School.
